Q: What is Chiropractic?

Answer:

The human body is controlled by nerves. Everything (circulation, breathing, digestion, etc.) is under the direction of this unbelievably complicated system. If the impulses of this network are transmitted normally to and from the brain without interference, the body will be at its optimum and able to ward off disease to the best of its ability.

If these impulses are stopped or interfered with, the area dependent upon them will malfunction and/or become diseased. The vertebrae in your spine often become misaligned (subluxated) and cause nerve interference.

Chiropractors adjusts the subluxated vertebra which allows the central nervous system to function as it was intended (at 100%) and the body to heal.

Chiropractic is a science, philosophy and art of natural health. It is based on the fact that nerve interference results in organ and/or body malfunction which left uncorrected results in disease.

Chiropractors rely on the inborn or "innate" intelligence of the body. This intelligence made the body and heals the body; it just has to be free of interference.

Chiropractors correct nerve interference through gentle and specific spinal adjustments, thereby removing nerve interference and allowing the body to do what it does best - that is, to take care of itself

Q: What is Upper Cervical Chiropractic?

Answer:

Upper Cervical Chiropractic is a special distinction within the chiropractic field. The Upper Cervical Procedure is a painless and safe spinal correction which restores body balance and reactivates the body's natural healing abilities by resestablishing proper nervous system function.

BACK

Q: What is Innate Intelligence?

Answer:

Chiropractic recognizes that we (science) haven't the slightest idea how to run the human body and that fortunately, for us, we don't have to know. Inborn within each of us is an innate intelligence capable of governing our body for a lifetime. It is only necessary for the innate intelligence to express itself, which it must do through the nervous system. The function of the chiropractor is to maintain your body free of interference. Vertebral subluxations result in an interference with the transmission of this inborn intelligence; Chiropractors remove this interference through vertebral adjustments.

If the world could grasp this Big Idea, all concepts concerning health would change overnight. Almost no drugs would be taken except in lifesaving emergencies or due to abnormal circumstances (accidents, etc.). The individual would still realize that although the drug is keeping them alive or freeing them from pain, it is not making them healthy again. Only their body can restore itself to proper function. Surgery similarly would be put into its proper perspective. All the so-called therapies would be seen for what they are: often attempts to relieve discomfort while overlooking the cause. People would begin to look elsewhere for the answer to all physical, environmental, and emotional problems. They would no longer revere the "man in white" the intellectual, or the scientist who proclaims "I have discovered the cure!" They would cease to worship the creation and begin to worship the Creator. This is the Big Idea in chiropractic.

"Intelligence is present everywhere in our bodies. Our own inner-intelligence is far superior to any we can try to substitute from the outside."

Deepak Chopra, M.D.

"God and the wisdom of the human constitute 90% of the hope of patients to recover. The body simply has super wisdom which is biased in favor of life rather than death."

Richard Colbalt, M.D.

"...A kind of super-intelligence exists in each of us, infinitely smarter and possessed of technical know-how far beyond our present understanding."

Lewis Thomas, M.D.

"The mind can dramatically affect the body. It follows that whatever upsets the brain's control of the immune system will foster malignancy. I try to get patients to understand that the body heals and not the therapy."

Bernie S. Siegel, M.D.

Q: What is a Subluxation?

Answer:

A subluxation is the condition of a vertebra that has lost its proper juxtaposition with the one above or the one below, or both; to an extent less than a luxation; which impinges nerves and interferes with the transmission of mental impulses (from Chiropractic Textbook, R. W. Stephenson, 1927).

Basically put, a subluxation (vertebral subluxation complex) is a misaligned bone that causes nerve interference. This interference alters nerve output, either increasing it or decreasing it - either way, the end result is malfunction. Malfunction left long enough will result in a lack of ease, or dis-ease. Dis-ease will eventually lead to symptoms.

Doctors of Chiropractic stress the point of early detection and prevention because of this fact. Why wait until symptoms manifest? Symptoms are nothing more than an accumulation of damaged tissue cells.

Q: How is my care determined?

Answer:

Your care is decided upon after a thorough evaluation of your symptoms and prior health history. Combining that information with the results of any orthopedic, neurological chiropractic examination, postural measurements, temperature differential studies, and X-ray studies, the doctor is able to pinpoint accurately the source of the problem and decide upon the best plan of health care.

Q: What is involved in Upper Cervical Care?

Answer:

There are four major parts to our examination and care procedure: consultation and examination, precise x-ray imaging, precise spinal re-alignment, and post-adjustment recuperation.

Consultation and Examination: A routine interview and examination is necessary to ascertain your current health status and case history. This is important for establishing a health baseline as a new patient and to assess your progress if you are a patient under our care. More detailed examination and testing may be performed if determined to be necessary by your doctor.

Precise X-rays: If during your examination we discover nervous system malfunction, an accurate determination of the upper cervical alignment must be made. Specially aligned x-ray technology is used to assure a proper determination of your spine. The x-ray images are then analyzed by the practitioner to determine the three-dimensional displacement of the spinal misalignment. Be assured that radiological examinations are performed only when clinically necessary to insure proper patient care.

Precise Corrections: The unique anatomy of the upper neck dictates the use of a unique adjustment to correct your misalignment. We use specially designed tables which help relax the spine, thus resulting in a gentle, painless and highly effective re-alignment of the spine

Resting Period: Upper Cervical care requires a recuperation period for two reasons. This is to give the nervous system time to accommodate to receiving 100% of its signals again. The second is to allow the ligaments and muscles that hold the spine together to begin to stretch and adapt to the change in the spine's position. Following the correction, the patient is escorted to a resting suite and remains there for approximately 15 minutes

Q: What should I expect after my first adjustment?

Answer:

After the first Upper Cervical spinal adjustment, you may experience a variety of changes within your body. These are due to the nervous system responding to the structural correction. These changes are a positive sign that healing is taking place. In order to heal, the body must go through different cycles of repair which very often express themselves in some of the following ways:

· Alleviation of symptoms

· Tiredness or sleepiness

· Muscle stiffness/Soreness

You should not be concerned if the pain changes or moves to another area of the body. Symptoms may decrease immediately. However, the amount of misalignment and severity of the condition will determine the recovery time. Please make the doctor aware of any and all changes. Remember, pain is a sign that the body is working, any changes can be part of the healing process.

BACK

Q: Does it hurt?

Answer:

An Upper Cervical spinal correction is painless and is usually barely felt by the patient. Because of the precise X-ray analysis, a correction can be made without any forceful jerking or twisting movements.

BACK

Q: How long does an adjustment last?

Answer:

The accuracy of the procedure affords the patient longer lasting effects. Thus, one or two adjustments, in many cases, is all that is needed to get results. And while the spine can again lose its proper adjustment, for most patients the procedure results in far fewer visits than most other procedures. The end result is that Upper Cervical Procedure provides simple, gentle and dramatic results. And that translates into greater relief, better health, fewer office visits and less money spent.

Q: I am concerned about radiation from the x-rays. Are they completely necessary?

Answer:

Yes, they are the cornerstone of Upper Cervical Spinal Care and are very specialized. Most chiropractic equipment today, along with lead filters, keeps exposure down to a minimum. Plus, any minimal danger from exposure, in our opinion, cannot be compared to the destruction that is going on in your body every minute your atlas obstructs brain to body communication. Any shift the atlas makes can cause multiple health problems. But sometimes that shift in position is no greater than the thickness of a fingernail. The doctor has to rely on x-rays to determine the exact position your atlas/axis vertebrae have misaligned. The specific analysis of the x-rays will allow the doctor how to reposition your atlas to within a fraction of an inch back to the correct position it should be.

The doctor will make the correction only after an intensive analysis of how far out of position your atlas is. After correcting the atlas, either a second series of x-rays are taken or a post heat reading is utilized to determine if the adjustment was done correctly. These are referred to as pre and post x-rays and pre and post heat readings. The doctor will show you these "before and after" x-rays and/or heat readings so that you can see the difference the correction has made.

Q: How soon should I get my children under this care?

Answer:

As soon after birth as possible, and then have them checked periodically as they grow up. You could not possibly give your child a better gift than to make certain that the one organ of the body that controls all the other organs and body functions, the brainstem, is doing its job without interference from the tiny bone just below it.

Q: Are Chiropractors "Back Doctors"?

Answer:

Doctors of Chiropractic are frequently referred to as "back doctors." This term is used because a number of studies from several different countries concluded that Chiropractic care for low-back pain is the best choice for low-back-pain treatment. They also noted that Chiropractic patients were more pleased with the care given when compared to other patients receiving medical care for the same condition.

While being the BEST at low-back-pain is good news, it's not the whole story. Chiropractors should more appropriately be called "Nerve Doctors" or "Doctors of Health Potential," because that is what we deal with every day. Furthermore, the goal of the Chiropractor is not the treatment of symptoms or disease, but the correction of vertebral subluxation. Once a subluxation is corrected, the whole body functions better. Take care of your self regularly, not just when you hurt - only then can health manifest itself.

Q: Who needs Upper Cervical Care?/ What Symptoms can be helped by Upper Cervical Care?

Answer:

When most people think of chiropractic corrections, they think of neck pain, back pain, or muscle aches. Specific Spinal Correction can help your body work better no matter what type of health problem you may have. Our organization is dedicated to correcting the Atlas Subluxation Complex which is a misalignment of the bone structure of the head and spine. This misalignment can block the communication between your brain and body causing pain, stress, and tension. This stress and tension can affect all physical and even mental activity of the body. Many symptoms can be relieved by correction of the Atlas Subluxation Complex. We have had positive results with such conditions as:

Allergies Fibromyalgia
Arthritis Herniated Discs
Asthma Horner's Syndrome
Athletic injuries Leg and Arm Numbness
Auto Accident Migraines and other headaches
Bell's Palsy Neck and Back Pain
Carpal Tunnel Sciatica
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Scoliosis
Chronic Pain or stress Seizures, including epileptic
Dizziness Sinus problems
Irritable Bowel Syndrome Trigeminal Neuralgia
Chronic Heartburn Diabetes

Q: Why is posture important?

Answer:

Posture is a preliminary way Doctors of Chiropractic evaluate the structural integrity of the human frame. Look in a mirror - is your head tilted to one side? Is one of your shoulders lower than the other? Do you have a short leg or find yourself having to tilt from side to side while standing still? Read the following quote to understand why we Doctors of Chiropractic do what we do!

"Better than 90 percent of the energy output of the brain is used in relating to the physical body in its gravitational field. The more mechanically distorted a person is, the less energy available for thinking, metabolism and healing."

-Roger Sperry, Ph.D. (1981 Nobel Prize for Brain Research)
